I was very moved by watching the recent David Attenborough Blue Planet series which graphically illustrated the damage our modern lifestyles are doing to our world. As a result, I initiated a discussion with colleagues, and these are note following that discussion:

We will all have slightly different views about what is important to us, but there is general agreement that Sustainable Living means minimising the harmful effect our lifestyle has on the world around us.

This could include:

Choosing products with less plastic wrapping

Consider whether wrapping is really necessary

Consider whether packaging is recyclable

Consider bigger pack sizes

Choosing products that don’t contain, or contain only small amounts of chemicals

Household products that are more environmentally friendly

Personal products (skincare etc) that are more environmentally friendly

No microbeads, SLS, silicons, petrochemicals

Consider organic products – e.g. local veg box schemes

Choose clothing that is less harmful to the environment

Natural fibres (manmade fibres shed when washed and go into seas)

Donate unwanted clothing to charity shops

Consider buying from charity shops

Avoid cheap, ‘disposable’ fashion items

Buying products that are locally made

Reduces distribution miles and supports local economy

Recycle all that we can and reduce food waste

Less journeys by car, opting for car with lower pollution level

Walk/cycle more, public transport.

Is the journey necessary

When possible, spend that extra little bit of time reading the labels on food and clothing so we understand what we are buying ie what is in it/ what it is made of and then make our choice

Consider the amount of packaging and how much of it is recyclable when buying products – put products back on the shelf if they have excessive packaging

Take my own reusable bags when I go shopping

Have purchased a reusable mug to use for tea/coffee when out to avoid the disposable ones that are not recyclable

Use environmentally friendly cleaning products – often Ecover – available from supermarkets, or buy others from the local Oxfam charity shop

Use candles made from vegetable wax candles rather than those made from paraffin wax

Use natural organic skincare/makeup with no toxic chemicals

Put bigger loads into washing machine – manmade fibres shed as clothes rub up against each other – this is reduced in a big load – the fibres(containing plastics) go into the waste water system and into the oceans

Most glitter is made of plastic – so no longer buy greeting cards, flowers etc that have glitter on

Bought a reusable microwave dish/plate cover – avoids the use of plastic clingfilm

Often look in charity shops for clothes – reusing rather than buying new. And avoid things that are likely to get worn once. Select more natural fibres.

When my plastic shower scrunchie wore out, replaced it with a natural fibre loofah.

Stopped using hairspray due to chemicals. Changed hair dye to more environmentally friendly product and changed toothpaste to one with less chemicals (both from Holland & Barrett)
